Lady Pirates Shine in District Opener

The Lubbock Cooper Lady Pirates launched their campaign for a fifth consecutive district title with a commanding performance, sweeping the Palo Duro Dons 25-7, 25-13, 25-13 in their district opener. The victory marked a strong start for the Lady Pirates, who are now 17-9 overall and 1-0 in district play.

Kambel Johnston led the charge with a team-high 11 kills, while Bird Moffitt was right behind her with 10 kills, showcasing the depth and power of the Lady Pirates' attack. On the defensive end, last season’s TGCA All-State Libero, Addi Southard, anchored the defense with10 digs and serving up 4 aces to stymie the Dons’ offense.

The spotlight, however, was on first-year starting setter Broox Lopez. The sophomore has been a crucial asset to the team all season, and Tuesday’s match was no exception. Lopez orchestrated the offense with a team-leading 18 assists, demonstrating remarkable composure and skill for her age. Despite being new to the starting role, Lopez has quickly adapted to the varsity level, consistently rising to the challenges of high-stakes competition. With their eyes set on another district title, the Lady Pirates have set a high standard early in the season, sending a clear message to their district rivals that they are once again the team to beat.
