Eric Ward Takes the Helm at Lubbock Estacado: A New Era of Leadership and Development

Eric Ward Lubbock Estacado

Eric Ward, a name synonymous with hard work and dedication, has been named the new head football coach and athletic coordinator at Lubbock Estacado High School. The former Texas Tech standout and Wichita Falls native brings a wealth of experience and a vision rooted in developing not just great athletes, but outstanding young men and women.

A Legacy of Leadership

Ward’s journey to Estacado is a testament to his lifelong commitment to molding young people. Approved Thursday by the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees, Ward immediately introduced his family, including his five sons, emphasizing the importance of family and leadership. His eldest, 13-year-old Jayric, is a testament to Ward's philosophy of raising leaders, embodying the work ethic and consistency that are central to Ward’s coaching ethos.

"My goal is to develop great young men and women, and I think that's a win for me," Ward said. "I want to teach them things that will make them successful post-high school. Developing leaders who can set the tone and be successful in the real world is my ultimate goal."

Building on a Foundation of Hard Work

Ward’s coaching philosophy is deeply rooted in lessons learned from his own experiences. One of his favorite coaches, B.J. Wagner, father of Estacado boys basketball coach Tony Wagner, taught him at a young age that “hard work will create opportunities, but consistency will keep you there.” This lesson has stayed with Ward throughout his career and is a pillar of his coaching strategy.

"I thank him," Ward said of Wagner's father, Coach B.J. "I always wanted to emulate and be a fraction of the coach he was to us. We came from impoverished environments, and he always gave us everything he had. That’s the kind of coach I strive to be."

From Player to Coach

Ward’s football journey began as a four-star receiver out of Wichita Falls Rider, leading him to Texas Tech, where he became one of the most accomplished receivers in the program’s history. His transition from player to coach has been marked by significant achievements, including his tenure as the offensive coordinator at City View Junior/Senior High School in Wichita Falls, where he turned the team’s record from 4-7 to 7-5 in just one season.

His coaching resume includes stints at WF Hirschi, Burkburnett, Elgin, and his alma mater, WF Rider. Each position has added to his extensive knowledge and understanding of the game, preparing him for this new challenge at Estacado.

A Vision for the Future

Ward’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the Matadors, who reached the region semifinals and finished with a 10-3 record last season. As they drop to Class 4A Division II, the team is poised to build on their success under Ward’s leadership.

"I think in a role like this, you use all your mentors," Ward said, "all the connections, all the coaches, because everybody's different. You have to learn, and I'm OK with learning. This is going to be a learning experience for me as well."

Ward’s commitment to continuous improvement and his openness to learning from his peers, including staff members at Texas Tech, will be crucial as he steps into this new role.

Community and Personal Life

Beyond the field, Ward has been actively involved in community service, including Special Olympics and Unified Sports Activities. His dedication to youth development extends to organizing youth football and skills camps, reflecting his commitment to fostering positive growth both on and off the field.

"We are excited to welcome Eric Ward to the Estacado High School and Lubbock ISD family," said Lubbock ISD Athletic Director Mike Meeks. "His extensive experience, innovative coaching techniques, and commitment to student-athlete development make him an ideal fit for our program."

Ward and his wife, Kenzie, have five children: Jayric, 13; Tyce, 10; Eli, 7; Kreed, 5; and Krue, 3. This close-knit family dynamic is sure to resonate with the community and serve as a strong foundation for Ward’s tenure at Estacado.

Conclusion

As Eric Ward steps into his new role at Lubbock Estacado, his blend of personal experience, professional achievements, and unwavering commitment to developing young leaders sets the stage for a promising future for the Matadors. With his leadership, Estacado High School is poised to not only excel on the football field but also in the broader mission of developing outstanding young men and women.
