Dr. Mike Moffitt Takes Helm of Lubbock-Cooper Volleyball After Successful Amarillo High Tenure

After a stellar five-season run with the Amarillo High Lady Sandies, Dr. Mike Moffitt announced Wednesday that he will be the new head volleyball coach at Lubbock-Cooper High School. The decision, though difficult, represents a homecoming for Moffitt and his family.

Moffitt’s coaching journey began in 1998, where he served as the student assistant coach at Texas Tech under then head coach Jeff Nelson. Since taking over the Amarillo High School (AHS) program in 2019, he has upheld the Lady Sandies' proud tradition. In five years, Moffitt compiled a remarkable 157-47 record, including an astounding 48-2 district record. His tenure saw the Lady Sandies clinch four consecutive 3-5A championships and never miss the Region I-5A Tournament. Under his leadership, AHS enjoyed 38 straight league wins, a 14-5 postseason record, and saw 15 players advance to college-level play.

Despite the bittersweet farewell to AHS, Moffitt is excited to lead the Lady Pirates, a program that has been on the rise, eliminating the Lady Sandies in the Class 5A regional quarterfinals the past two years to make back-to-back Region I-5A Tournament appearances.

Moffitt will also bring his youngest daughter, Bird, a standout libero committed to Texas Women’s University, to join the Lady Pirates' roster.

Lubbock-Cooper ISD officially announced Moffitt’s hiring on April 3, welcoming him as the new head coach of the LCHS Volleyball program. The district’s Facebook post read, “LCISD is pleased to announce the hiring of Mike Moffitt as the new head coach of the LCHS Volleyball program. Coach Moffitt brings extensive experience to the Lady Pirates, including coaching at the high school, club, and collegiate levels.”

Moffitt's accolades include four District Coach of the Year honors and leading Amarillo High to an undefeated 2023 home season. The Lady Sandies' 38-game district winning streak, set under his guidance, still stands.

Moffitt takes over from Dana Hill, who led the Lady Pirates to a 32-13 overall record and a perfect 11-0 district mark last season, culminating in their second consecutive Regional Tournament appearance.

The Lady Pirates have become a West Texas powerhouse under previous coaches Karli Morrison and Dana Hill. With Moffitt at the helm, the program looks poised to continue its ascent under one of the state’s best coaches.
